Perry was born to actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Perry made her debut in television shows as Jackie Harris, a character that was played by her mother on Roseanne, an ABC comedy Roseanne. She was not allowed to perform by her parents until adulthood, as they feared the anxiety it could create. Perry acknowledged that she was not at ease in the stage during high school. She began performing as a means to make friends during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry managed to get minor TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. However, her homesickness caused her to move back to California and she returned working on stage. The Other Place was performed by her mother and her on Broadway in 2013. She performed with the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry was in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. In 2017, she had a minor role on ABC's thriller about politics Scandal in which her father was the main character. In the same year, the actress was selected to play the younger character of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger model of the mother's. The character was assigned an audition to the actress, regardless of the fact that she has a family tie to the character.
